Dose Rate Effects in Electron-beam Initiated Polymerization

Sage M. Schissel, University of Iowa

Abstract: Properties of some materials synthesized via electron-beam (EB) polymerization appear dependent upon the rate at which the initiating dose is delivered (i.e., dose rate effects). The relationship among dose rate, glass transition temperature, and conversion was explored for an acrylic monomer series. A preliminary predictive relationship was developed to estimate the magnitude of the dose rate effect, enabling scale-up of process variables for polymers prone to dose rate effects.
