Cationic UV Curable Silicone Release Coatings:  Historical Perspective and New Formulation Tools

Richard Eckberg, Momentive Performance Materials

Abstract: Cationic photocurable silicone release coating systems were commercially introduced over 25 years ago. Incompatibility of polar 'onium salt photocatalysts in silicone media coupled with the need to balance release properties versus fast photocure performance have driven developments for this technology. Novel iodonium phosphate catalysts and new sensitizers have been shown to combine silicone miscibility with effective photoresponse for UV release applications.
