Ultra Violet Reflectivity of Microporous PTFE Material

Jason Chen, POREX CORPERATION

Abstract: Breakthroughs in LED performance for UV applications have been difficult to commercialize because many highly reflective materials degrade under UV rays. This paper demonstrates the reflective properties of porous polytetrafluoroethylene in the 250nm-350nm range and correlates reflective capabilities with porosity and thickness. Microporous PTFE is unaffected by UV light and exhibits diffuse reflectivity of >99% in the UV spectrum. This makes PTFE a compelling material for integrating spheres, luminaire backings, and other equipment or reflectivity applications.
